I have been directing stories since I was a child. Even my Xhosa oral we had to do for class I would do using our home camera. We even did Hamlet in Xhosa. Professionally I have been directing for the last 11 years. Highlights- there are so many. I have been fortunate to work with various acclaimed celebrities from Desmond Tutu, Brian Turner (BBC chef), The Hairy Bikers (BBC chefs), to great South African actors like Richard van der Westhuizen, Albert Maritz, Lida Botha, Andre Rossouw and various others.
It was also a great honor to receive 4 awards at the Monaco International festival with our upcoming film ANDERKANT DIE STILTE. I recall speaking to Babitha, a well known presenter on BBC news, and responding to how she really enjoyed the story. It is moments like these I treasure and carry close to my heart.
They have been the backbone to everything I do and for every success I have, I know in my heart they have been there for me. Katelyn and Vera has also been a great inspiration to my stories I write and I have found myself more and more drawn to epic stories such as Pirates of the Carribean and Lone Ranger- that is completely family friendly, but so memorable.
It is the struggle between following the route everyone else does and sitting in a day to day office job, with a clear job description, clear salary- a life between the black and white… or following the risk and excitement of truly being a creative entrepreneur. I must admit I think too many people jump into this field blindly. To be a true artist you must also be a great businessman. There is no use in creating great paintings, but it does not appeal to an audience, or you simply can’t market it.
What I do to break free… is daily (whenever I am not on shoots) keep to my schedule. I let my creativity roam free in those times and stick to having to do my errands within the time I put out- then I get to go body board in the ocean in pringle bay, go do agility training with my german shepherd called Malyshka and really spend quality time with the people closest to my heart- my family. I will not trade one day of what I have now for any other job as what I do gives me so much and gives me the opportunity to give even more to others.
Whether it is helping a family on the coffee lands to get real fair trade solutions or giving a musician a visual spectacular showcase of his song, I can truly say it feels like I breathe creativity and can only thank my creator, God for that.

There is too many wannabe’s around that falls in the grey lines of average. Being an artist you need to amaze people. That is why it is the creative industry. This year at Imagenheart we have set out to take every project on with this in mind- creative bravery. No matter what the budget- from doing a PSA for a non commercial company, to working on big budget commercials or features- there is no limit to creativity and we aim to take audiences on a journey to a new world of visual wonder.
DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF WORK AND HOW YOU WORK WITH OTHERS
I am passionate about finding ways to creativity tells stories, filled with rich subtext. Coming from a commercial background the stories are specific in what we want it portray, yet visually and emotionally created to engage audience. Working with others have been for me the highlight of being in film. From the start of my filmmaking journey I believed this is 100 percent essential to make a good film. I have collaborated with people in every field to bring each film, commercial to life. Currently I am in process of a film called William Austen. This required working with the person, whose live story it is, as well as drawing on well experienced directed Bruce Macdonald. On past productions I have spent significant time to give my team chance to explore how they view the story in their designation. Visual research, presentations and collectively pitching has offered great insight into telling stronger stories.I have co directed 2 feature films. Also been mentored by Sara Blecher at Talents and various others over the years
What is for you the most challenging moment during a film/series production and why?
Currently to be honest it is finding the best way to bridge markets, and get the required funding to make the film. I have been able to do big commercials, as well as films with very little budgets, strongly relying on the team involved to bring together the story. My challenge now is to find ways to create films that can go beyond the South African small cinema market, in order that we can make more films, and explore what it means to be South African filmmakers in a global context
Please name a topic that is important for you and how you deal with it in your work.
Currently a topic that is very important to me is Being a man, or a father. In my research of writing the book WILLIAM AUSTEN, I have found the role that a father play, and the impact it has on a small boy growing up without a father. I am myself recently a father and it makes me very conscious of this. Dealing with it in my own work. It has definitely influenced me to question the type of films I make, for whom firstly, and what it portrays. The films I have made so far has strongly had a social element to them in that they were used for community screenings- (such as the hiv/aids virgin cure myth) and other related. This has been a great strength. However I am slowly returning to rediscover the art of firstly telling a story that engage, entertains and take audience on a journey. Seeing the world through this perspective have allowed me to ask the question- do I care, when I watch a film. This has opened a whole new array of filmmaking combining the emotional journey as well as entertainment
i wake up to see a world... filled with drama...conflict...suspense adventure and fantasy. I wake up to see the stories all around me... it makes me feel alive. Watching others meet and in conversation i overhear the exhcange of stories.... as people narrate their lives lver to each other trading tales back and forth. It makes me realise.... that this... life... is not merely an intelectual excercise. And that people are not moved to action by an overload of data... technology or spreadsheets... people are moved by emotion.. and the best emotions are usually engaged by the simple phrase...once upon a time. I am honoured to be a descendant of an immense and ancient community of holy people... of troubadours, of travelling poets, kings, boer kommando - of storytellers.... i tell stories in order to live

He asks for reinvention and through captivating films he turns on our curiosity into that which is sometimes overlooked. Socrates said, “An unexamined life is not worth living” and for Desmond the true story lies in the unseen that which lurks beneath it all; the subtext. He shows us what truly lies behind the rich tapestry of visual delight.
Desmond has directed various commercials and feature films of which his first Anderkant die stilte, has won various awards and nominations at international festivals such as Monaco International, Cape Winelands International. These awards including best directed, produced and written. His second feature Lenteblom, which deals with the Virgin cure related to aids have been release successfully to over 10 000 farms across South Africa.
